Bio

Jesse MartinI think the driving forces behind most of my art are these twisted and bizarre memories of growing up poor in Imperial Beach, California.   It was the late 70’s and my parents were very much involved in hippie culture.   Being very young, I would see all sorts of strange characters come through our home.  One man in particular had no fingers, and would take out his false teeth whenever a helicopter flew by.  Curious, I couldn’t resist asking him why.  He responded hauntingly, “To wave at the Tooth Fairy!”  To this day I still imagine the Tooth Fairy flying around in her helicopter stealing the teeth (and perhaps fingers) of miscreants.

I'm very much interested in stripping away layers of normality in a subject and exploring a more fractured and somewhat dysfunctional core.  Through imagery, I hope to examine the uncomfortable truths that we prefer to mask in our day to day lives. I believe that the toothless man's story, given its schizophrenic logic, suggests something disconcerting yet honest about his personal experience as well as the human condition.
